Your Guide to a Fun, Easy, and Joyful Children’s Photography Session Experience

Baby smiling for a cake smash session First, let me just say: that’s totally normal. I’ve photographed children of all ages for over a decade, and I’ve seen it all—giggles, pouty faces, silly dances, and everything in between.

Here’s what you can expect when you book a children’s photography session with me—and a few tips to make sure we capture those natural smiles and genuine moments you’ll want to keep forever.

Timing Is Everything

One of the most important pieces of advice I can offer is this: let’s schedule your session when your child is at their happiest. Every kiddo has their sweet spot during the day—and we want to avoid times when they’re hungry, tired, or winding down.

If your child still naps, let’s skip the hour before or after nap time. For older kids, we’ll avoid anything too close to bedtime. A happy, well-rested child is the key to a relaxed, fun children’s photography session.

The Best Light Happens at the Best Times

For outdoor sessions, I typically recommend shooting about one hour before sunset—this time of day gives us that soft, golden light that looks beautiful on skin tones and creates a dreamy, natural backdrop.

That said, I know some little ones have early bedtimes. If a sunset session would push into cranky-hour, we can schedule your session right around sunrise instead. Morning light is just as lovely, and often more peaceful.

Keeping the Session Relaxed and Fun

I keep things simple and child-led. We’ll play games, take breaks when we need to, and let your child warm up at their own pace. No forced smiles here—just real expressions that reflect who they are in this season of life.

I may ask you to bring a favorite toy, snack, or even a playlist of songs they love. Anything that helps them feel comfortable and happy is welcome.

What to Wear

Neutrals and soft tones photograph beautifully, especially in outdoor light. Avoid big logos or busy prints—simple outfits help keep the focus on your child’s face and personality. If you’re unsure, I’m happy to help you plan wardrobe choices.

After Your Session: The Reveal & Ordering Appointment

Once your session is complete, we’ll schedule a Reveal and Ordering Appointment at my studio. This is where you’ll get to see all of your images and choose the collection that best fits your needs.

You’re welcome to purchase just digital images, but most of my clients prefer my carefully curated collections—which include a beautiful, high-quality keepsake album filled with your child’s portraits. These albums are timeless, durable, and designed to be passed down and treasured for generations.

You can also choose an Heirloom Wood Print of your favorite image, a unique and stunning way to display your portraits on the wall.

If you’re looking to decorate a larger space, I offer custom Gallery Wall Design as well. Simply take a photo of the wall you have in mind—whether it’s your living room, hallway, or bedroom—and measure it. Send that to me, and I’ll create a visual mock-up with accurate dimensions to help you see exactly what sizes and arrangements will look best in your home.

My goal isn’t just to take beautiful portraits—it’s to help you enjoy them every single day.
