One of the most common questions I hear from expecting parents is: “What age is best for newborn photos?” It’s an excellent question. While you can technically photograph a baby at any stage, there is a specific “sweet spot” that allows for those tiny, curled-up, sleepy portraits everyone loves.
After years of photographing newborns in my studio, I’ve found that timing is the secret ingredient to a successful, stress-free session.

In my experience, the ideal age for a newborn photography session is around 14 days old. This two-week window offers the perfect balance of comfort, sleepiness, and flexibility. Here is why those first 14 days matter for SEO-worthy results:
Deep Sleep: Around two weeks, babies are still in a deep-sleep phase. This allows us to move them gently from pose to pose without waking them.
The “Newborn Curl”: Babies are still very flexible and naturally settle into those womb-like, curled-up positions.
Skin Transitions: By day 14, many babies have moved past the initial “puffy” stage or newborn acne that can sometimes appear in the very first week.
Once babies approach the one-month mark, they become much more alert. They wake more easily, stretch their limbs out more, and are more sensitive to their surroundings. While we can still get beautiful images, they may not be the classic “posed” newborn shots.

Timing impacts almost every part of the day, from how many setups we can achieve to the overall “vibe” of the studio.
Sessions scheduled within the first two weeks are typically the calmest. Because the baby is in a deep sleep, we can move through multiple transitions efficiently. This allows me to focus on the fine details—like tiny eyelashes and curled toes—without rushing.
If your baby is a bit older, don’t worry! We can still capture stunning images. However, these sessions often take a little longer. Older babies may have “stronger” opinions about being moved and might keep their hands in fists rather than the soft, relaxed hands we see in younger newborns.

I offer two distinct session types to ensure every family gets the best results based on their baby’s development:
The Classic Session: Best for babies around 14 days old. This session focuses on intricate posing and naked newborn shots, which require the baby to be very sleepy and relaxed.
The Bundle Me Session: A wrapped-only session that is much more flexible. Because the baby is securely swaddled (mimicking the womb), it is perfect for older newborns or babies over 14 days.
Note: For the Bundle Me session, I recommend babies be under 10 pounds so they fit comfortably in my specialty wraps and props.

Safety is always the priority. For NICU babies, the “14-day rule” changes. I typically recommend scheduling your session 14 days after your baby comes home. This gives them time to adjust to their new environment and gain strength.
While some photographers suggest the first 5 days, I find that 10–14 days is better. It gives breastfeeding mothers time for their milk to come in and allows the baby to move past the initial “transitional” look of the first few days.
Always book during your second or third trimester. I limit the number of sessions I take each month to remain flexible for babies who arrive earlier or later than their due date.
Whether your baby is 10 days old or 30 days old, my goal remains the same: to provide a safe, patient, and professional experience that results in portraits you will treasure forever. While the “sweet spot” is 14 days, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and supported.
