What Lens Is Best for Newborn Photography?

When people think about newborn photography, one of the first questions I’m asked is: What lens do you use? It’s a great question, and the answer depends on your photography style, budget, and the kind of shots you’re aiming to capture.

As a professional newborn photographer, I’ve tested multiple lenses over the years. Each one serves a purpose. Let’s break down the best lenses for newborn photography and why investing in the right equipment makes a big difference.

My Go-To Lens for Newborn Sessions: 24-70mm Zoom

For the majority of my sessions, I rely on the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM lens.

This versatile lens allows me to stay close to the baby for safety and comfort while still capturing wide-angle crib shots or tight detail shots without changing lenses. It’s fast, sharp, and flexible—a must-have in my kit.

To pair with this, I shoot using a Canon Mirrorless EOS R5 Camera, which offers outstanding resolution and performance.

Yes, this setup is an investment. The lens costs around $2,400, and the camera body alone is $3,000. But the clarity, depth, and ease of use are well worth it when capturing fleeting newborn moments.

For Close-Up Details: The 100mm Macro Lens

Parents love those tiny toes, delicate lashes, and sweet button noses. To capture those close-up features, I use a Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro lens, priced around $1,200.

Macro lenses allow for extreme detail and create beautiful background blur, making every close-up feel dreamy and intimate. They’re ideal for gallery prints and fine art newborn photography.

A More Budget-Friendly Option: Prime Lenses

If you’re just getting started or want to practice newborn photography at home, a prime lens is a fantastic choice.

Recommended Prime Lenses:

  • 35mm f/1.8: A great all-around lens for lifestyle newborn photography, especially in tight spaces.

  • 50mm f/1.8: Often called the “nifty fifty,” this is a classic starter lens. Be mindful that for overhead prop shots, you may need to back up—or grab a step stool!

These lenses are significantly more affordable, usually priced under $300, yet they still offer excellent image quality.

Why Lens Choice Matters in Newborn Photography

Having the right lens can:

  • Improve image sharpness and depth

  • Allow flexibility without disturbing the baby

  • Ensure safety by keeping the photographer at a comfortable distance

  • Capture both wide scenes and close-up details beautifully

It’s one reason hiring a professional newborn photographer is worth it—they’ve already invested in gear designed for quality and safety.
