! Picking a baby name can be a momentous decision, but luckily the Social Security Administration reports popular baby names by state each year, and this information can help parents in Ohio make one of the most important life decisions ever made. Therefore, I created this article to help expecting mom and dads that are trying to think of Columbus Ohio’s most popular baby names so they choose their baby’s name!

On one hand, past and current trends in baby names may surprise you, and the twist and turns in these unpredictable waters are impacted by pop culture, life events, heritage, and much more. As a result, here are some of Columbus, OH’s most popular baby names in 2020.

The Ohio State Buckeyes Changed the Baby Name Game

The legendary win that the Ohio State Buckeyes garnered in 2011 implanted quarterback Braxton Miller into Ohioans’ hearts and minds and landed the name Braxton onto the baby names list that year, and the name has remained on the list since that time.

This isn’t the first time athletes or celebrities have caused a boom in baby names, and it won’t be the last. The name-of-the-moment effect caused spikes in names like Joanna, Sharona, and Rosanna, which are all also in popular hit songs.

Most popular baby names for Boys

Not to mention, Liam and Noah have been on the top three list since 2013.   Liam has firmly held the number one spot on the list of names for boys since that time. Therefore, the name Mason popped onto the radar in 2010 and held a top-three place for five years.

Biblical and generational names have continued to grow in popularity for boys. Athlete names have also been used as traditional male names for quite some time.

MOST POPULAR BABY NAMES FOR Girls

As for female names, the name Olivia has held a top-three position since 2014.  Olivia has fought for a top position with the name Emma until 2019.  In that case, Ava has held a top-five position since 2005.  Therefore, there is often more movement in the top ten female names due to the options in spellings used.  For example, Jennifer has remained popular since the 1970s, along with the biblical names Elizabeth and Sarah.
